Senegal's energy transition differs meaningfully from that of other JETP countries. Senegal does not have a significant coal sector, and has historically relied on imported fuels. The platform therefore focuses on accelerating renewable energy deployment to avoid over-reliance on natural gas as the country develops its own gas production capacity, with a target of reaching 40% renewable energy in the electricity mix by 2030.
The platform is at an earlier stage than other more mature JETPs, with its investment plan not yet publicly accessible. Governance and inclusive stakeholder engagement have been identified as priority areas for the platform's development, with civil society actors and communities emphasising the importance of transparency and participation in how the transition is planned and managed.
