Country Platform

Egipto

Egypt's Nexus of Water, Food and Energy (NWFE) program, launched in July 2022 under Egypt's COP27 presidency, is a frequently cited reference point for the current generation of country platforms due to its cross-sectoral approach that connects energy, water, food, and transport, reflecting Egypt's integrated development priorities. Each pillar is coordinated by a designated MDB, with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) leading on energy, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) on water, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) on food, with the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation serving as secretariat and organizing across partners. This architecture has enabled structured partner engagement without creating a competing central planning function outside of government.

The Energy Pillar, coordinated by EBRD, has mobilized approximately $4.6 billion towards renewable energy projects, supporting plans for the retirement or repurposing of thermal generation capacity alongside renewable energy expansion; the AfDB-led Water Pillar secured $3.3 billion to modernise irrigation systems. The platform has since expanded beyond its initial remit under NWFE+, with the addition of a transport pillar.
